The Central government has rejected the proposed tableau from West Bengal for the Republic Day Parade on January 26 next year in New Delhi. The theme of the proposed tableau was the "Kanyashree Prakalpa" project, a financial assistance scheme aimed at discouraging girls from dropping out of school and encouraging them to pursue higher studies, a flagship project of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
State Women & Child Development and Social Welfare Minister Sashi Panja expressed disappointment, stating that the rejection might be a deliberate move to prevent the success stories of West Bengal's unique girl-child development project from gaining wider publicity. Trinamool Congress leaders argue that permitting the tableau would indirectly acknowledge that the Union government's "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" project was inspired by West Bengal's "Kanyashree Prakalpa" project, which has received international acclaim, including from the UN.
